For more than 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being and provide resources and information to support individuals and communities who may need mental health support.
Encouraging all Californians to raise awareness about mental health and improving access to mental health services is a critical component of the DHCS mission. Raising awareness reduces the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and seeking treatment. Without treatment, mental health disorders can reach a crisis point. BHWD is one way that DHCS shows its commitment to mental health.
The SAMHSA Mental Health Awareness Month website offers a variety of resources to recognize this important observance.
